For the academic year 2011/12, the MA course is available for students anywhere in the UK.  For the DipHE course, you will need to be based at an existing Hub.

MA in Kingdom Theology (for theology graduates)

If you have a Bachelor's degree, or equivalent, in Theology you should be eligible to join this MA programme. Following two years' part-time study and the completion of an original thesis you would be awarded a Master of Arts Degree in Kingdom Theology.

The modules you would study in the first year of the course are:

OT: Torah, Prophecy and History with Dr Rob Barrett (20 credits)

This module provides both a survey of critical issues and themes in OT historical, prophetic and legal texts and some in-depth analysis of key primary texts. Standard critical issues of historical reconstruction and in the literary and theological interpretation of key texts are examined. Throughout there is a concern to understand the primary texts as authoritative Scripture and their place in a larger canonical whole (of both the Old and the New Testaments). There is also consideration of the ways in which OT texts can nurture contemporary Christian practice and students’ development as disciples, ministers and leaders/priests in the Church and in the public square.

Systematic Theology with Lucy Peppiatt (20 credits)

This module introduces students to current issues at the forefront of scholarship in the area of systematic theology: especially, Trinitarian Theology, Christology, Theological Anthropology, Soteriology, Ecclesiology, Pneumatology and Eschatology. There is also a treatment of key issues in theological method: Scripture, Tradition, Reason and Experience. As well as studying the core Christian doctrines there is an emphasis on how these doctrines relate to the culture in which the Church finds itself, including engagement with current philosophical ideas and cultural trends. Teaching will combine treatments of core doctrinal subjects in overview, engaging with both ancient and modern texts as well as a closer focus on specific figures and theological movements.

Paul in Contemporary Theological Perspective with Dr Tony Cummins (20 credits)

This module provides an analysis of Paul’s theology, focusing on the apostle’s message concerning God’s covenantal and creation-wide relationship with his people, humanity and the world. It involves four interrelated elements: [1] an overview of significant approaches to Pauline theology in Christian tradition and contemporary scholarship; [2] the formative contexts and certain important components of Paul’s vocation and theology, such as his Jewish background, conversion, apostolic vocation, and pastoral letters; [3] an exploration of the main contours of Paul’s theology, including God’s righteousness, the death and resurrection of Jesus, and the Spirit-empowered Church’s common life and mission; [4] and an engagement with the challenges posed by Paul’s theology for the church, Christian theology, and contemporary culture.

Already have a CertHE in Theology?

If you have a Certificate of Higher Education (CertHE) in Theology, you may be able to join our BA in Kingdom Theology starting at Diploma level (year 3). Following completion of two years' part-time study you would receive a Diploma of Higher Education in Kingdom Theology, and an additional two years' part-time study would earn you a BA Degree in Kingdom Theology.

The modules you would study in the first year of the course are:

Old Testament: Creation & Worship with Rev Dr Crispin Fletcher-Louis (20 credits)

The module examines Israel’s understanding of creation, what it is for humanity to be made in God’s image and the significance for Israel’s construction of sacred space and its liturgical drama of in the temple as microcosm and restored Eden. The principal primary texts that are examined are Genesis 1-3; 1 Kings 3-11; Exodus 25-40, associated Psalms (esp. Ps 8, 46, 48 and 89) and prophetic literature (e.g. Ezek 16, Jer 10). The approach taken is both historical (paying close attention to the relationship between biblical texts in their ancient Near Eastern context and their position in the development of Israelite religion) and theological (with a particular concern for the role of the primary texts in the formation of biblical theology/theologies). Some consideration is also given to the relationship between this OT material and a biblical understanding of ethics, liturgical theology, models of leadership and priesthood, spirituality, the arts and the marketplace.

Pastoral Studies with Dr Walter Thiessen (20 credits)

This module introduces the resources that equip students for wise and effective pastoral care in positions of Christian leadership and responsibility for others. There is an exploration of the resources and wisdom available from Scripture and Christian tradition, psychology, and the ways in which these can be understood within a theoretical (theological) and practically effective framework. Issues experienced in both the Church and in the context of the life-place are covered, including, for example: marriage & divorce, ageing, illness, death and bereavement, anxiety, anger, depression and stress, addictions and co-dependency, conflict resolution & group dynamics, crisis intervention, dysfunctional church and abusive leadership, personal and professional growth, unemployment, power dynamics in pastoral care, and gender identity and relationships. The place of counselling and other professional, specialist therapeutic strategies in effective pastoral care is discussed. Stress is placed on critical role for all pastoral care to be founded on the development of Christ-like character and gifting, mature interpersonal skills, and the ways these are nurtured by the core disciplines and practices of the Christian life.

Introduction to Pauline Theology with Dr Tony Cummins (20 credits)

This module provides an expositional overview of Paul’s theology, focusing on the apostle’s message concerning God’s covenantal and creation-wide relationship with his people, humanity and world.  It involves three interrelated elements: [1] the formative contexts and certain important components of Paul’s vocation and theology, such as his Jewish background, conversion, apostolic vocation, and pastoral letters; [2] a more extensive exploration of the main contours of his theology, including God’s righteousness, the death and resurrection of Jesus, and the Spirit-empowered Church’s common life and mission; and [3] reflections on the challenges posed by Paul’s theology for the Church and the world today.
